MORATORIUM THANKS

Sometimes you push on a door & it seems to push back at you as if it were offended by the touch of your hands; other times it swings open with such ease that you can’t help but confidently stumble through it.  Walking into this fresh open space, I find myself still looking over my shoulder at those who have been blowing on the door all along, seeing to it that I become more than potential…

Marisa Diane, you are my past, present & future, bringing my soul to life day after blessed day.  Your delight, your tears, your courage, & your glory are all over these songs & all over my existence.  I love you madly.  Mom, you are most honored – a living legend to your kids & in this world – here’s ammunition for more invaluable hiking convo.  Dad, I hope you hear this & I hope you smile & cry at the same time… I miss you.  To the family in Alaska (Mom & Dad Pepperd), KC (Faith), Valpo (Aaron, Carla, Ashton & Ava), Dungannon (Bry & Bre) & wherever you are, Gabriel – all our love & deep gratefulness for yours.  DB’s, for your steadfast presence & true celebration of our lives.  Sarah & Caleb, because you called the seeds “oaks” long before these songs ventured out of our living room.  Sheps, for offering me the reins to a wild horse (maybe even a bi-corn) & charging me to ride like Charles would.  Bryces, for becoming our abundance & remaining our sanity through transition & normalcy alike.  To the Mullers, who dared to embrace moratorium as a creative force & not an excuse for cop-out.  Dennis, Mary, & the Helsers for teaching me to be a worshipper.  For you Foreigners, the reunion tour begins New Years 2022 (which once sounded sooo far away) – you know where.  To the indomitable Tre Sheppard: I think you have officially earned some sleep.  Amanda, Jeremy, Caleb, Josh & even you, brother: pure genius.  To the 24-7 familia across the globe (especially Jon, Joe, Andy, Pete & Phil), & to the Campus America team still watching, waiting, & persevering… the dawn is near.  To our family at the KC Boiler Room, who fashioned many of these songs, often while not even realizing it… We continue in the pains & joys of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.

This album is dedicated to the BCC family, who upheld my arms when the flag of David became too heavy to carry alone.  Let these songs be the first-fruits from Santa Fe.

And especially to Joy Abigail.

BEYOND MORATORIUM

Although I love singing songs that fit within the specific genre of “worship” music,
I feel a bit squirmy being solely categorized as one such artist.

As best as I can tell, worship goes far beyond a certain style of music, and even far beyond music itself.  My artistic interests venture into all sorts of places, as do my thoughts about “life and love and why.”  I think I’m probably most comfortable with an acoustic guitar, a couple friends on a back porch, and the kind of autumn background that makes you simultaneously evaluate and enjoy life to its full.

Listen below for a taste of one such mood & much more music to come.
